Veitchiana

This Calathea has round leaves with a special design on them. In the evening the plant closes its leaves as the light fades. Calatheas are named after the Greek word for basket. The flowers (which are very slight) are arranged together resembling a basket. The colourful Veitchiana is originally from Peru. This small shrub has very large robust leaves. These leaves are used in Peru as plates to hold food.

Care Tips

  • The Vetchiana needs little water but it is important that it is given regularly.
  • The temperature must remain between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • The plant loves shadow and is, therefore, suited to dark corners.
  • Adding plant food in the water every fortnight is very beneficial to the colour of the leaves
